This paper (2015) is a review of the Addis Ababa-based, IGAD-led peace process. It focuses on highlighting risks which may stand in the way of an inclusive settlement, including the competition for power, the question of ethnic divides that have fuelled violence, the multiplicity of armed non-state actors; how to include them in a settlement without creating a gargantuan military that could bankrupt the country and remilitarise the situation. This briefing looks at the evolution of China’s relationship with Sudan and then South Sudan after independence, with a particular focus on the potential for the transition of Chinese engagement from reactive, short-term conflict resolution to longer-term conflict prevention. The briefing goes on to suggest potential entry points for cooperation between China and the UK that could provide mutual learning opportunities and ultimately lead to better collaboration in support of sustainable peace in South Sudan.

This analysis (2015) reviews the Arusha Reunification Agreement and attempts to spur public debate on a newly instituted effort towards a genuine search for peace in South Sudan. This review also summarizes the main points of the Agreement, assesses public response, and sketchily provides some pointers for practice.

An Inter-Agency Humanitarian Evaluation (IAHE) was conducted in South Sudan in April 2015 under the auspices of the Inter-Agency Standing Committee (IASC) Transformative Agenda for the global reform of humanitarian action in large-scale emergencies.
