This report examines the mounting challenges that the UN faces in South Sudan in the context of the civil war. It focuses on the UN peacekeeping mission in South Sudan, UNMISS, which remains one of the international community’s principal interventions in the country and has the critical capability to protect at least some of the people under threat in the short and medium term.

This report aims to advance discussions about integrating a masculinities perspective into peacebuilding policy and practice. It examines existing programmes that promote non-violent and gender equitable masculinities and poses key questions about how these can be further developed to challenge the gender norms which drive conflict and insecurity. This brief synthesizes voices of internally displaced persons seeking protection at United Nations peacekeeping operation bases in Juba, South Sudan. In early August 2014, the Stimson Center conducted seven focus groups with people living in two protection of civilians (POC) sites inside UN bases in Juba.
