Humanitarian organisations carry out their operations on the premise that those affected by natural or man-made disasters have ‘the right to life with dignity and, therefore, the right to assistance’. This ethnographic study reconsiders the concept of tribe and its influence on group boundary‐making practices in South Sudan. The findings revealed ways in which students manipulated their group boundaries by giving different meanings to nominal category of tribe.
