The crisis erupted at the end of 2013 engulfed nearly all states and community groups resulting in the proliferation of conflict actors. While the crisis has impacted all economic sectors, livestock was specifically affected because of the targeting for cattle raiding by the warring parties. Added to this was the restriction on seasonal movements without which the livestock system can’t function and disease outbreaks due to lack of access to veterinary services. This gap necessitated undertaking two interrelated activities that were carried out through this study. The first was assessing the extent to which the livestock sector has been affected by the ongoing conflict in terms of production constraints, changes in household herd size, morbidity and mortality levels, major types of livestock diseases, changes in seasonal migration, access to animal health services, livestock markets and the like. The second activity was, based on the findings of the assessment, identifying key indicators and producing the necessary templates in order to set up a livestock information system.
