SUMMARY:Roundtable | Displacement\, Access and Conflict in Western Bahr el Ghazal
DESCRIPTION:**Closed event** \nConflict in former Western Bahr el Ghazal has shaped displacement and humanitarian access patterns\, which in turn have influenced conflict dynamics. These interactions are difficult for aid actors to navigate in a neutral\, impartial and independent way. \nThis closed-door discussion will focus on how these challenges have been managed so far\, and how practice and/or policies have adapted or could better adapt to manage these risks moving forward.

SUMMARY:Research Presentation | The Complexities of Engaging with Government in South Sudan
DESCRIPTION:Aid has interacted with governance\, the state\, and power in South Sudan in different ways at different times. Different models of engagement have had different implications for peace and conflict. The recent agreement in Khartoum will likely lead to increasing internal and external pressure for aid actors to re-evaluate their approaches to working with government. The aid community will need to learn from the past and identify short-term and long-term opportunities\, risks\, and implications of the context today. \nJoin us as CSRF Researcher Lauren Hutton presents some initial analysis that considers the opportunities\, challenges and risks of different modalities of engaging with the government.

SUMMARY:Research Presentation | Kinship & Coping Strategies
DESCRIPTION:Aid actors working in South Sudan frequently highlight the importance of local coping capacities in responding to conflict-related\, economic and livelihoods crises. At the same time\, they also try to counter misuse of aid in its many forms\, including diversion of aid\, abuse of office and the maintenance of extensive patronage networks. However\, many international actors do not recognise how coping capacities (underpinning resilience) and misuse of aid ultimately spring from some of the same social forces. \nIn South Sudan\, local traditional social support mechanisms are vital for survival in times of crisis. They are based on concepts of mutual support\, social obligation and vulnerability that can sometimes conflict with western ideals of transparency\, accountability and “fair” allocation of resources (including aid). \nDr. Santschi will share preliminary findings from recent research into these links and discrepancies\, and their implications for aid. Join us as we attempt to better understand and navigate the complexities of providing assistance that supports local strengths\, while avoiding misuse of aid. \nTo RSVP\, please write to info@csrf-southsudan.org
