This article (2004) attempts to analyse the emergence of the South Sudan Defence Force, classify its various components, identify its leaders and understand their concerns. This report from 2004 focusses on security and on protection challenges related to the then ongoing preparations for the return and reintegration of millions of displaced in the North-South war. In a response to the explicit request by the humanitarian community and donors to map out the protection challenges connected therewith, this report was consigned to assess human security and protection with respect to the North- South scenario.
This report looks into the opportunities and constraints of local initiatives for peace and their contribution to the resolution of conflict at the local level, with a particular focus on women initiatives. Secondly, it seeks to explore in what ways outsiders could provide meaningful contributions to such initiatives.
