This article argues that while COVID-19 itself fails to discriminate between the poor and the powerful, its effects are mediated by unequitable social structures and economic hierarchies, and that in countries suffering from conflict and hunger, such responses are even likely to entrench class divisions between political elites and the suffering majority.
